US Permanent Representative to UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield addressed Russia saying that NATO became 'scapegoat' for Russia and a means to justify the 'the right to impose its will by force' and 'dictate sovereign Ukraine's security decisions', while speaking at UN Security Council debates on regional organisations in New York on Friday.
"Our own security alliance with NATO remains a cornerstone of our national security and a vital platform for global cooperation," she highlighted. "Of course, for Russia, NATO is merely a scapegoat, as you heard today. A place to lay the blame for its own egregious violations of international law, a convenient rationale for threatening the very existence of a sovereign state and a fellow member of the United Nations."
During the debates, she commented on the sentence of Evan Gershkovich for espionage charges claiming that he 'has committed no crime' and stressing that he was punished "because he is a journalist, and he is an American."
Gershkovich, a US citizen, has reported on events in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet states for the WSJ's Moscow bureau. He was detained by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 30, 2023, in Yekaterinburg, accused of collecting state secret information on the Russian military-industrial complex, allegations he denies. He was sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime penal colony on July 19, 2024.
British Permanent Representative to UN Barbara Woodward emphasised that 'Russia's aggression' against Georgia in 2008 and against Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 "undermines the role of regional organisations in the neighbourhood."
"Georgia and Ukraine withdrew from CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) due to this violation of their sovereignty," she said.
Russia assumed the rotating chairmanship of the UN Security Council on July 1. The country is expected to hold two more events before the end of the month, focused on a Middle East settlement and the organisation's co-operation with the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO).
