Description

Athens residents reacted on Monday to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' call for snap general elections following the defeat of his Syriza party in European and local elections on Sunday.

"Syriza are trying to collect their remains, their ruins. As time passes more and more people will go away from Syriza. I also believe that people will not vote differently in a snap vote. They will vote the same way they did in the European election," said resident Mrs. Evgenia after stating she was "disappointed" with the election result.

Some residents expressed satisfaction with Syriza's electoral defeat, which was accompanied by a rise in votes for the conservative New Democracy party.

"People are in despair with Mr. [Alexis] Tsipras. Syriza took everything from us with high taxes," said resident Mrs. Vasilikoula.

According to resident Niko, "New Democracy will win the snap vote, maybe with a lower percentage, because the vote during the EU election is a 'relaxed' vote. But sure, we will have a new Prime Minister after the snap vote. And this is right."

"I was expecting this result in the European election. Greece must finally go forward. Greece was kneeling during all of these years. So people have sent a powerful message that we want something else," said resident Efi.

On Sunday, Tsipras said he would ask the Greek President for the "immediate announcement of the national elections."

The New Democracy party scored 33.3 percent in the European ballot, with Syriza tailing behind with 23.7 percent.

Reports have indicated June 30 as a likely date for the snap election.
