The inside of Al-Roumi Medical Centre, the only operational healthcare facility of Omdurman city, was seen on Tuesday, as camera crews were finally given access three months after it reopened.

"In the last period [of months], a very high frequency [of patients] appeared, and this is an indicator of the return of citizens to the state," explained administrator Mahdi Ibrahim. "May God fix the country and end this damned war."

The facility to the northwest of Sudan's capital Khartoum was closed in April 2023 amid fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and militants of the Rapid Support Forces.

Footage shows the inside of the centre, where citizens could be seen lining up at the reception desks and waiting to get their medical checkups in the main hall, while doctors carried out their work in the laboratory and conducted examination for their patients.

"We had many participants from the armed forces and treated them free of charge. Even the citizens who came to the centre, most of them received a 50 per cent discount and for free in some cases," added the administrator.

Another staff member the Al-Roumi centre, Administrative Director Akram Abdel Wahhada gave an insight into what the centre had to offer for its citizens despite the ongoing conflict.

"Al-Roumi Medical Centre provides integrated medical services in all specialties and rare specialties. We have a heart consultant, a kidney consultant, an ophthalmology department, and a dental department," he said, "We used to work in the morning shift, but now we work in the evening shift as well. From eight in the morning until eleven at night."

Al-Roumi Medical Centre is a major healthcare facility of Omdurman, a sister city of the capital Khartoum and situates on the west bank of the Nile. The centre was hit during an airstrike almost a year ago on April 25, 2023, which led to 13 people injured and ultimately its closure, before reopening earlier this year.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has caused severe disruption to medical treatment as well as imports from neighbouring countries and supply chains, while many domestic factories have been destroyed.

Fighting continues between Sudan's armed forces and militants of the Rapid Support Forces.

Up to 15,000 people have been killed according to UN sources, with over eight million displaced.
