Description

Israeli police arrested several people at a protest against the planned evictions of several Palestinian families in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood on Tuesday.

Demonstrators gathered in front of one of the houses where residents face eviction in the neighbourhood, before police attempted to disperse them.

Altercations broke out as Israeli forces were seen dragging an activist, and pinning another protester to the ground during arrests.

Dozens of neighbourhood residents have been organising sit-ins over the past days, in protest against the imminent threat of eviction. The threat comes after the Jerusalem District Court ruled that at least six families in the area must leave their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, despite having lived in the neighbourhood for generations.

The ruling came after the court found that the properties had been owned by Jewish families prior to 1948, a claim denied by the current occupants.

The court also ruled that seven other families must leave their homes by August 1. 58 local residents, including 17 children, will be displaced to make way for Jewish families.
