The IDF conducted more than 30 airstrikes at dawn on Sunday, including against buildings near a road to Beirut’s international airport, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Footage shows a blaze and plumes of smoke billowing from the site.

NNA reported on Sunday that southern Beirut witnessed 'the most violent night since the beginning of the aggression', with strikes against a petrol station on ‘the airport road, a building on Al-Barjawi Street in Ghobeiry, the Al-Safayr and Burj Al-Barajneh areas, the Choueifat, the American neighbourhood, and the Laylaki surroundings of Al-Mrayjah, Haret Hreik’.

The Israel Defence Forces announced early on Sunday that it had struck Hezbollah 'terrorist sites' in Beirut. Spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated that Israeli air force warplanes "guided by precise intelligence, carried out a series of airstrikes in the Beirut area hitting several arms depots and other terrorist infrastructure."

Before the strikes, the IDF sent notices to residents of southern Lebanon in Burj Al-Barajneh, the Laylaki and Haret Hreik to keep to a distance of at least 500 meters.

The IDF announced the launch of ‘Operation Northern Arrows’ on Monday, September 23 with the stated aim of allowing tens of thousands of residents of northern Israel to return to their homes.

Israel began a 'limited and targeted' ground incursion into Lebanon on Tuesday, after over a week of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. More than 1,300 have been reportedly killed and over 8,000 injured in those strikes at the time of publication, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Last Friday, an Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburb killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and others. Iran launched a wave of missiles on Tuesday, which it said was in response to Israeli assassinations and attacks on its allies.

Tensions in southern Lebanon first escalated in mid-September after mass explosions of pagers and handheld radios belonging to Hezbollah. The group has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
