Description

Police deployed water cannon against protesters, as about 300 people rallied to demand the release of hundreds of prisoners, in Santiago's Plaza Baquedano on Friday.

The protests demanding the release of prisoners arrested during the people's protests in October 2019 recently gained momentum in order to demand the swift passing of a pardon law in the National Congress. Critics said that the legal process has been too slow.

Demonstrators stayed until the late evening hours at Baquedano Square which lead to a major interruption of traffic in the area.

Protesters were holding banners reading 'True justice. No to impunity', were dancing and playing the drums. Some were waving Chilean and indigenous flags. Riot police units used water cannons against the protesters to disperse the gathering.

The 2019 Chile people's protests were a series of demonstrations in the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile and other cities in the country against social inequality and were sparked by public service cost increases. Later they developed into a social movement demanding a constitutional reform and changes in the economic system of the country.

Organisations for the rights of the detainees have reported that at least 806 people are currently in custody. Many of them have been detained for more than a year without charges.
