Hindu believers gathered in Jamnagar on Monday for the unveiling of the 'world's largest turban' for an icon of Ganesha, during annual celebrations of the elephant-headed deity.

Footage from the event shows the 551-metre turban, inspired by the Indian national flag and created by local craftsmen. Believers participated in prayers, took photos, and posed with the decorated statue.

The Eight Wonders Group, the organisation behind the creation, displayed several certificates from Guinness World Records to support their claim.

"Every year, we bring something new and present it in front of the people so that the national sentiment can be awakened. This year, our team has decided to create a special turban for Ganapati called Bhagri Ganpati ji, the turban is made of 551 metres of thread, and hoping to set a new Guinness World Record," stated Bharatsinh Parmar, founder of the Eight Wonders Group.

Parmar noted that the Lord Ganesha statue was crafted from natural materials.

Bharatsinh, the turban's designer, shared insights into its creation. "This is the first time in my life that I have made such a big turban. Even though I was not sure I would be able to make it, with the blessing of Shri Ganpati ji, I was able to make it."

The annual Ganesh Chaturthi begins with rituals like Prana Pratishtha, where priests chant mantras to 'bring life' into the idol. This is followed by Shodashopachara Puja, a 16-step ritual offering Ganesha's favorite foods, such as modak and coconut rice.

Throughout the festival honoring deities, thousands flock to pandals—ornately decorated temporary structures—set up across the region. They are adorned with flowers and various embellishments, welcoming worshippers day and night. This year's celebrations commenced on September 6 and will continue until September 17.
