Description

Residents of Calais, the main ferry port in northern France, shared their views on the recent tragedy where 27 migrants drowned trying to cross the English Channel, on Wednesday.

Residents described as insufficient the measures taken by the British and French governments to reduce migrant traffic.

“It gives chills," said Armand, a Calais resident, adding, "We are surrounded by sadness, there are people from all corners of the street who have died and that makes me sad."

According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, a European Frontex plane would initially be deployed over the English Channel from 1 December to detect smugglers.
