Description

Civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton questioned how the police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright could have mistaken her gun for a taser, as the local police chief has posited, at a press conference in New York City on Wednesday.

Speaking alongside the lawyer representing the Wright family, Ben Crump, Sharpton said "if she did not know in 26 years the difference in size and weight of a gun as opposed to a taser, then, how was she a veteran in police?"

"How was she even on the force that long," he questioned, in reference to officer Kim Potter who resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department on Tuesday, as did Police Chief Tim Gannon.

"We demand people deal with the question there are two levels of policing in this country: one for blacks and one for whites," Sharpton said, calling for the passing of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

The conference took place after a 'Mothers of the Movement' panel, with the mothers of other Black men slain by police, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Stephon Clarke, and Michael Brown, during a convention of Sharpton's National Action Network civil rights organisation.

"I thank God that although the officers who killed Stephon Clark are still employed with the Sacramento Police Department, I am getting a bit of justice with these officers being arrested immediately in the cases of George Floyd and Daunte Wright," said Sequette Clark, Stephon Clark's mother.

The officer who fatally shot Wright has been charged with second degree manslaughter.

Wright, 20, was killed on Sunday after being pulled over for a traffic violation and fatally shot while he was trying to get back into his car.

A police statement released on Monday said the incident was an accident, as the officer intended to use a taser, not a gun, on Wright.

Sharpton also announced that his National Action Network, will cover the funeral costs for Wright's family.
