Description

A Christmas market opened in Damascus despite more than 11 years of war in the country and ongoing economic challenges.

Footage filmed on Thursday shows the festive atmosphere, showcasing the resilience of the community in the face of adversity.

Garina, an organiser from Saga Group, emphasised the importance of finding joy regardless of the situation.

"People are looking for happiness like we did during the crisis as we were searching for joyful moments in simple cultural activities," she explained.

Reflecting on the situation in Gaza, visitor Um Mahmmdouh recognised the difficulties faced by mothers, fathers, and children. However, she emphasised the importance of acknowledging the right of children and young people to enjoy life as well.

"What is happening to the mothers, fathers and children of Gaza has exacerbated the situation. Nevertheless, our children and young people have the right to go out and seize the moment," she stressed.

"Despite what is happening, we did not fear, on the contrary, we went out as life will go on eventually. I hope the war in Gaza puts an end and our hearts are with them, we ask God to release them of this ordeal very soon," shared Arij, another visitor, echoing the sentiment of resilience.

Recognising the gloomy situation in the region including Syria, Amer Deeb, a marketing consultant, emphasised the importance of creating hope and bringing people together in search of joy.

"As you know the area has been grappling, let me say, with a gloomy situation, but creating hope and the flow of these people on weekends in search of hope and joy tend to change the view of tomorrow," he stated.

"We came to participate in the economic and commercial events amid these Christmas's joyful vibes," he added highlighting the significance of the Christmas Market during the holiday season.

The Christmas Market, with its festive atmosphere, serves as a beacon of hope, fostering a sense of community and optimism despite the challenges faced by the war-beaten country.
