Description

Dozens of climate activists marched in the Argentine resort city of Mar del Plata, on Tuesday, to protest the expansion of oil drilling rights closer to the coast of the Buenos Aires province.

Protesters were seen marching in the city centre holding banners and chanting slogans during the demonstration organised by the group Atlanticazo..

"We need the world to know what is happening because the temperature was 44 degrees last week and we are experiencing the reality of climate change daily and we continue to look away," said activist Julieta Paladino. "Eleven provinces of Argentina are burning, what are we doing? Instead of putting out the fire they are going to generate more fire, more oil, what are they playing at? Climate change arrived, what are you waiting for?"

A court is currently reviewing the government's case to expand offshore drilling rights for oil companies, which would include new drilling sites near Mar del Plata.
