New Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian delivered his first live address to his people in the capital city of Tehran, as he assumed office on Saturday.
Pezeshkian discussed the economic challenges the country is facing.
"We are under heavy sanctions right now. The US, Europe and countries which are dependent on the US, have imposed an embargo on us, do not trade with us and have created problems for our country. But helping people, solving their problems and not dodging responsibilities has nothing to do with sanctions,” the president explained.
The new president explained some key focus areas for his government.
"We are solving the problems of farmers, teachers, nurses, and medical activists. Some say we have a great inheritance, but there’s no money so I don't see what is so great about it!? [Persian proverb and joke about the state budget being insufficient to cover costs]. I do not want to complain. We asked the permission of the Supreme leader. We took some money from the treasury and paid the debts," he said.
This comes after Iran has in recent weeks been hit by protests in multiple Iranian cities and nationwide strikes by health workers and farmers, over working conditions.
Masoud Pezeshkian was elected following the death of former president Ebrahim Raisi alongside his Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six officials in a helicopter crash in the country's northwestern mountains on May 19.
