US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris declared that her running mate Tim Walz is 'the kind of vice president America deserves' during a campaign rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday after they both officially joined the election race from the Democrats.

"He's the kind of person who makes people feel like they belong and then inspires them to dream big. And that's the kind of vice president he will be," she claimed.

Harris went on to compare the 'resumes' of Walz and the Republican Vice President nominee JD Vance and remarked that "it's like a matchup between the varsity team and the JV (junior varsity) squad."

She shared that as governor, Walz signed the most notable expansion of voting rights in Minnesota in more than 50 years, and together they are "going to finally pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act."

The bills that failed to pass the Senate were meant to protect voters from prejudice based on race and establish requirements that would allow every voter to participate in free and fair elections.

"Coach Walz and I may hail from different corners of our great country, but our values are the same. And we both believe in lifting people up, not knocking them down," the vice president emphasised.

Harris also stated that the Democrats are 'the underdogs in the race', adding that they have 'the momentum' and she knows what they are 'up against'.

"Our campaign is not just a fight against Donald Trump. Our campaign, this campaign, is a fight for the future," she continued.

Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her vice presidential running mate. Walz is in his second term as the state governor and chairs the Democratic Governors Association.

Following the nomination, former US president and Republican nominee Donald Trump shared a fundraising email saying that Walz would be the 'worst VP in history' and would 'unleash hell on Earth' as well as open borders for 'the worst criminals imaginable.'

US President Joe Biden, who was participating in the presidential campaign until July, announced that he would not be seeking re-election on July 21 via X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Following Biden’s statement, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her intention to become the candidate of the Democratic Party.

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. On July 15, the Republican Party convention nominated Donald Trump as their candidate for the 2024 race.
