Description

Heavy security measures were put in place around Hennepin County Courthouse in Minneapolis on Sunday, ahead of the jury selection in Derek Chauvin's trial scheduled for Monday.

The courthouse in which the jury selection and subsequent trial is set to take place was fenced up, soldiers were seen around the building and at least two armored vehicles from the United States National guard were spotted arriving on site.

"Sadly, I think it's essential especially with what we saw last summer after Mr. Floyd died in police custody and the damage that was done across the city. But also what we saw on January 6 in Washington DC," said Tony, a local.

Speaking about the security measures, local resident Rick stated, "somewhat you understand but then at the same time wow what have we come to?"

Former police officer Derek Chauvin is accused of killing George Floyd by kneeling down on his neck in May of last year in Minneapolis.

Floyd's death sparked both peaceful and violent nationwide protests across the United States as activists for Black rights demanded equal justice and denounced a pattern of unarmed Black individuals being killed by police.
