Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claimed his government 'uncovered plans to assassinate' him during talks with the US last year, as he addressed the World Congress Against Fascism in Caracas on Wednesday.

"In 2023, five times… we uncovered plans to assassinate me and violent plans to attack military units and centres of political power in the country," he alleged. "All detainees, material authors and some of the intellectual authors, are convicted and confessed."

Washington had not commented on his claims at time of publication. The US has previously condemned the voting process in Maduro's recent re-election in July, while the president claimed Washington was trying to instigate a 'colour revolution' in conjunction with the opposition.

"Today, the United States wants to secure what they call their backyard, their living space," he continued, adding that it was impossible to prevent the 'emergence of a new multipolar world."

"Who doubts the power of China as a great power of this century? Who doubts that [the] power of Russia was put to the test? Who doubts that India is occupying its space as a power that it had in past centuries?" he asked.

Maduro also spoke about Ukraine, claiming that NATO, in its 'aggression against Russia', had created the 'most dangerous conflict from the military point of view'. The alliance insists it is 'purely defensive', while Russia has accused NATO members of escalating the fighting with repeated arms supplies. Moscow also blamed NATO expansionism for triggering the conflict, which Kiev and its allies deny.
