the head of the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai on Thursday.
Rousseff, who was president of Brazil between 2011 and 2016, replaced Brazilian diplomat Marcos Troyjo, appointed by Brazil’s previous leader Jair Bolsonaro, and will head the NDB until the end of Brazil’s presidency in 2025.
The BRICS group, formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is working on developing their own financial infrastructure, and some member states have already switched to trade in local currencies to reduce dependence on the US dollar and euro.
Lula's official visit to China will last from April 12 to 15, with the two countries expected to promote bilateral relations and friendly cooperation in several fields.
The five BRICS economies currently account for more than 40 percent of the world’s population and nearly a quarter of global GDP.
