Syrian refugees who fled to Lebanon during the civil war were seen returning to the ruins of their homes in the village of Al-Amiriyah in rural Idlib, in footage published on Friday.
"There was bombing here as well," said Khaldiya Ahmad, referring to the early days of the war in Syria. "We were scared and fled to Lebanon in 2013, specifically to the town of Ar-Raiid. It was safe there, and we worked and settled down. [Then] there was bombing there too, so we returned to our homeland after it became a safe area."
Footage shows the men, women and children walking among the ruins, with some seen hanging out washing and attempting some semblance of normality.
"We struggled in Lebanon, especially at the start, and recently, the situation there worsened, a war worse than what we faced in Syria," added Ahmad Hassoun. "Homes were destroyed, forcing us to leave everything behind. After 13 years of war, we returned to Syria, only to find a severe crisis - homes destroyed with no doors or windows. We returned with just the clothes on our backs."
Despite the destruction, some were also positive that their lives in Syria could now be rebuilt after many years of conflict.
Israel has conducted a ground incursion into parts of southern Lebanon, as well as an ongoing campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets over the past month. Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that 2,574 have been killed and over 12,000 injured at time of publication.
