The Social Democrats (SPD) won the most amount of seats in the Bundestag, according to Federal Election Commissioner Georg Thiel in an official statement on Monday morning.

SPD were the strongest party with 25.7 percent. Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered their worst results in their history with just 18.9 percent. Greens came in third with 14.8 percent.

Left-wing Die Linke Party also saw a disappointing loss with only 4.9 percent of the ballots, down 4.3 percent since their last result, but having won several direct mandates.

It is thought 1.3 million voters switched from CDU to SPD and 900,000 switched to vote Green.
