Description

Thousands gathered at Puerta del Sol square in the centre of Madrid on Sunday evening to celebrate the end of 2023 and the beginning of the New Year.

Footage features people dressed in bright festive attire having fun, taking photos and waiting for New Year's countdown. After the clock struck midnight, the fireworks lit up the night sky of the Spanish capital and attendees celebrated in the traditional way - by eating 12 grapes, to mark each of the coming 12 months.

"The truth is that I'm really looking forward to it, it's the first time I've come here, I've been told that it's a lot of partying and I think I'm going to start the year off on the best foot after experiencing the campaigns in this magical square," said Lorena, one of those present.

"My first time at this madness and I've come because you have to experience madness once in a lifetime. That's why I'm here. And the truth is that it's been crazy. And I won't do it again," added Sofia, another resident.

'12 grapes of luck' is a Spanish tradition that consists of eating one grape with each stroke of midnight, and has been observed since 1909.
