Description

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Athens on Thursday to protest racism and show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, in a demonstration which was organised by the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) union, under the motto of "Break the chains."

Protesters, some of whom had their hands chained with mock handcuffs, were seen holding up banners and placards bearing slogans such as "I can't breathe. Break the chain of exploitation," and "Stop the racist murders. Struggle for workers, lives, and rights."

Demonstrators were seen marching through the streets of the capital, passing by the US embassy before ending up rallying in front of the Greek Parliament.

"It's something not only [related to] the death of [George] Floyd, but also "to [the] difficult situation that appears there [in the US] with the unemployment and the way they treat the coronavirus," protester Ilias said.

Similar demonstrations have been held across Europe to denounce racism and police brutality, in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis after a white officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
