Description

Satellite imagery taken on Wednesday, along the Ahr river, shows the extent of the historic flood in parts of western Germany.

The pictures reveal the damage the flood caused to the infrastructure in the Ahr valley. Whole areas have been washed away, layers of mud cover large parts of the region and country roads and bridges were torn down. With large parts of telecommunication and electricity network gone, communication for residents remains difficult.

Clean up operations are still ongoing in multiple towns of the Ahl valley. The German government has pledged aid to rebuild the affected communities.
