A delegation led by Indiana’s Republican Governor, Eric Holcomb, met Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on Monday, following two other high-profile US visits in August, including that of House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.
Holcomb landed on Sunday evening for the four-day visit, which will focus on economic ties, particularly semiconductors, according to a statement from his office.
"We're facing and specifically seeking to turn supply chain pains into supply chain gains. I think the way we get there faster, in a more resilient fashion, is by doing it together," Governor Holcomb told reporters.
He is expected to meet leaders of Taiwan's semiconductor industry before leaving for South Korea on Wednesday.
On August 9, President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act, which seeks to promote semiconductor research, development and production, as well as protect supply chain security.
Tsai Ing-wen told Holcomb that "democratic allies must stand together and boost cooperation across all areas."
It’s the third major US visit to the island in a month, after Pelosi’s trip and a US delegation led by Senator Ed Markey.
China warned of 'counter-measures' following the US Speaker’s visit, conducting a series of military exercises around the island. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory under the 'One China' principle. It is yet to respond to Holcomb’s trip.
