Nicolas Maduro thanked the Venezuelan people while addressing his supporters in Caracas on Sunday after being reelected as president for a historic third term.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared his victory with 51.20 percent of the vote.
"It is the triumph of peace and stability, of the republican ideal, it is the triumph of the ideas of equality,” he said, adding that “this, Commander Hugo Chavez, is your triumph.”
Hugo Chavez was Maduro's predecessor as both president and head of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) party.
The elections in Venezuela coincided with the 70th anniversary of the birth of Chavez, who passed away in 2013.
Venezuela has been under US sanctions for more than 15 years, with Washington refusing to recognise Maduro as the country’s president after the 2018 election.
