Description

Washington DC mourners marked the first anniversary of the police shooting of Breonna Taylor with a vigil in her honour at Meridian Hill Park (Malcolm X Park) on Saturday.

Several civil rights organisations and speakers demanded justice and police accountability for the killing of Black women.

"When I think about Breonna Taylor, it is more than just police brutality. This mess with her name on it represents multiple pandemics we are in," speaker Destiny told the attendees.

People danced to live music and held a meditation among other acts next to an altar with candles commemorating Breonna, where they laid flowers next to her picture.

Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician was shot and killed by police in her home on March 13, 2020, after police officers broke into her apartment as part of a drug-dealing investigation.

Taylor's boyfriend exchanged gunshots with the police, shooting and injuring one of the police officers. A charge of attempted murder against him was dropped earlier this month.
