Beijing's Garden Expo Park was transformed into a dazzling display of light last week as the 'Colour Lantern Festival' returned to the capital ahead of China's Mid-Autumn and National Day celebrations.

Footage captured on Sunday shows crowds of visitors enjoying towering displays made from thousands of traditional paper lanterns depicting scenes from Chinese culture and paying tribute to the country's unique architecture.

"I felt that the lanterns at the scene were really amazing, and some of the scenes were particularly grand," a tourist said. "it really blew my mind."

"This is my first time participating in this kind of event. I feel that the atmosphere is excellent," added a second. "The lights were as bright as day."

According to local reports, around 100,000 lanterns were used at this year's festival in over 200 displays. The event attracted 22,000 visitors on the opening day alone. Organisers say the 2024 edition is the 'largest lantern festival' ever hosted in Beijing.

The festival opened its doors on Saturday, September 14 and will run until October 31. Visitors can also buy unique souvenirs at more than 150 stalls and enjoy traditional opera shows and song and dance performances.

It comes ahead of Tuesday's annual Mid-Autumn harvest festival, also known as the Moon or Mooncake Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar.
