Description

The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike on the Al-Qard al-Hassan Association banking branch and adjacent buildings in the Shiyah district was seen in footage on Monday, after warplanes reportedly carried out more than 11 such attacks on Beirut's southern suburb on Sunday evening.

The video shows the main building almost completely destroyed, as well as security personnel cordoning off the area and bulldozers clearing the rubble.

According to local media, the strikes targeted buildings across the southern suburbs of Beirut such as Shiyah, Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh, Al-Kafa't, Al-Ghubiri, Al-Salem district and Shwayfat.

Israeli military spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, warned locals to avoid buildings connected with the organisation on Sunday evening, claiming it had been used to "finance [the] Hezbollah organisation to conduct its terrorist activities against the State of Israel."

The Al-Qard al-Hassan Association claimed it had become a target due to the "depletion of Israel's bank objectives and its bankruptcy" which "led to its threats" against "our branches."

"Nevertheless, we adopted all needed arrangements since the beginning of the war to safeguard the deposits and savings of people," the statement added.

Al-Qard al-Hassan Association has 31 branches across Lebanon, and was founded in 1982. It is not connected to either the Lebanese banking system or the SWIFT system.

Israel has conducted a ground incursion into parts of southern Lebanon, as well as an ongoing campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets over the past month. Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that over 2,400 people have been killed at time of publication.

The current escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began last month with explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens and injured thousands. The sides have exchanged cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
