Description

Counter demonstrations of pro-Palestine and pro-Israeli advocates faced off in Berlin on Saturday as they called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.

Footage shows protesters waving Palestinian, Lebanese and Israeli flags during the counter rallies with some holding banners reading: 'Stop the genocide in Gaza', 'One genocide does not justify another' among others. Police officers were also seen monitoring the opposing protests.

Some protesters were temporarily detained by emergency services after allegedly storming a luxury store following the demonstration, according to local reports.

The German government has backed Israel's right to defend itself. Last month, it denied claims that arms permits had been suspended, after the transfer of weaponry stalled amid a number of reported legal challenges.

Israel is currently fighting Hezbollah with airstrikes and ground troops in southern Lebanon and conducting an ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza.

The Gaza conflict followed the October 7, 2023 attacks which killed 1,139 people according to the Israeli side. Over 2,600 have been reported killed in Lebanon and over 42,900 in Gaza at time of publication, according to figures released by the Lebanese and Palestinian sides.
