Description

Pope Francis met with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) leaders in Erbil, on Sunday morning, as part of a historic four-day trip to Iraq.

Upon arrival, Pope Francis was greeted by KRG President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and former President Masoud Barzani.

Following his visit in Erbil, Pope Francis will visit Mosul where he is scheduled to recite a prayer in Hosh al-Bieaa. After his visit to Mosul, Pope Francis is scheduled to travel to Qaraqosh, where he is expected to visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The Pope's historic visit to Iraq comes as part of an initiative to preserve Iraq's ancient Christian communities and support the return of those Christians driven out by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
