Description

Archive footage filmed in 1982 features the main phase of the Lebanon War, the 'Siege of Beirut', which took place between June and August.

Israel launched the military operation, which it called 'Operation Peace for Galilee’ after gunmen from Palestinian militant group, the Abu Nidal Organisation, attempted to assassinate its ambassador to the United Kingdom Shlomo Argov.

It followed a series of attacks and counter-attacks between the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) operating in southern Lebanon and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), leading to civilian casualties on both sides of the border.

Footage features IDF troops and equipment arriving in Lebanon, as well as the heavy bombardment of Beirut which left residential buildings and infrastructure seriously damaged.

Fire engines, ambulances and volunteers can be seen arriving at bombed-out sites, as well as evacuating the injured. The video also shows the bodies of victims on the city’s streets.

The conflict ended with the expulsion of PLO forces from the country, although Israel remained in a 'security zone' in the south until 2000.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
