German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appealed for unity and closure as he attended a ceremony commemorating the victims of the shooting attack in Hanau exactly one year after, on Friday.

"I know that our reasonable fellow citizens with a heart want to live in harmony side by side. They do not want to differentiate between 'them' and 'us'. They want an 'us' - and they are working throughout our country to ensure that hate and violence, contempt and disrespect have no place here," said Steinmeier.

On February 19, a 43-year-old German citizen Tobias R. from Hanau opened fire outside a shisha bar at Heumarkt district, driving off to a second location in Kesselstadt district, where he opened fire again. The double shooting left 10 people dead, with five injured, before the perpetrator and his 72-year-old mother were found dead at his address.
