"We're going to have 4,403 athletes competing here over the next 12 days. That is a record, the most number of athletes ever to compete at a Paralympic Games," spokesperson Craig Spence told a press conference in the Media Center. Tokyo 2020 will feature 75 more athletes than Rio 2016.
The biggest delegation is Japan's, with 254 athletes competing across 23 disciplines.
Delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the 16th Summer Paralympics will be held from August 24 to September 5, with spectators banned from the majority of events as Tokyo is currently under a state of emergency due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.
