EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell declared that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) actions 'can't be justified' by the right to self-defence after its attacks on Lebanon while speaking at a press conference in New York City on Thursday.

He asserted, "The war is not a solution, and these attacks against Lebanon have been creating such a great number of civilian casualties that cannot just be justified by the right to defence."

Borrell remarked that although 'the right to defence exists for everyone' including Israel, Tel Aviv is not only protecting its territory.

"The way this war is being conducted, by this high number of strikes from the air and from the land forcing hundreds of thousands of people to leave their countries, their houses, which are being destroyed so they will not have anywhere to go back, is certainly not the way to ensure the security of Israel," the EU High Representative declared.

The IDF announced the launch of a military operation 'Northern Arrows' with airstrikes on Hezbollah positions on Monday. The attacks have killed at least 700 people and injured over 2,189 others since Monday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health at the time of publication. The shelling targeted several areas in the south: Shebaa, the Bekaa Valley, and Mount Lebanon.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated over the past week, following mass pager and handheld radio explosions, which Hezbollah blamed on Israel. The IDF did not comment.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging cross-border fire since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October 2023.
