Sassoli announced the results of yesterday's vote on the deal, with 660 out of 697 parliamentarians voting in favour, five against, while 32 abstained. At the same time, lawmakers passed a resolution dubbing Brexit a 'historic mistake,' which passed with a similarly large margin of support, with 578 votes for, 51 against, and 68 abstentions
The agreement was already provisionally in effect after it was finalised on Christmas Eve and signed off on by the UK Parliament, with European Parliament approval being the treaty's final legal hurdle, although it still awaits ratification by the EU council of ministers on Friday.
The move marks the final end of the lengthy Brexit process, which took almost five years, although not the end of tensions between the UK and the EU amid ongoing disputes over the Northern Ireland protocol of the agreement, as well as other issues.
