At the beginning of Day 8 of the Games, the 24-year-old athlete won the event at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in 49.45 seconds, surpassing the old 49.50 mark set by himself in 2019 and picking up his second individual gold in Tokyo. Kristof Milak from Hungary won silver while, while Noe Ponti of Switzerland took the bronze. Dressel had also won gold in the 100-meter freestyle and also competed in the 4x100-meter mixed medley relay, where the United States team finished fifth.
