Firefighters emerged to the flaming forest in island of Evia, Greece's second biggest island on Wednesday, to battle with the fierce wildfire spread across the region.
Footage shows firefighters with equipment rushing to the site, where they were seen dispersing the inferno with water hoses, while excavators were used to pull down the trees.
"Within seconds it entered the forest. From there on, it was very difficult to contain. There were efforts with aerial means and the fire brigade, but we are at a point where it's ten at night, and the fire is still out of control," said Aggelos Illias, president of the local community.
Roaring wildfires had thrashed the forest on Evia Island since Monday, urging over 200 firemen to mobilise to the site to combat the flames, while two nearby villages were evacuated as ordered by local authorities.
Windy and dry weather conditions, along with the difficult terrain had hindered the dispersing efforts. The situation had started to improve since Tuesday, before the fire once again engulfed the local area on Wednesday.
Greece's wildfire season has been exacerbated by dry weather, strong winds and escalating heat waves in the summer months, which raises great concerns from the government.
"We still have a very difficult month, August, ahead of us and obviously we all need to be on high alert," stated Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a meeting with his cabinet.
Wildfires have been raging across Evia, located off central Greece's eastern coast, since 2021 during the fire season.
