Description

Syrians who have returned to their war-ravaged neighbourhoods in Aleppo have been struggling to restore their homes and shops amid the severe economic crisis afflicting the country, especially after the recent devastating earthquake.

"When we returned, everything was devastated. We tried as much as possible to partially restore the store so that we can get back to our work as the economic situation is very bad," Mohammed Samlem Ibn Maarouf, a shop owner.

Mahmoud Qubersi, a resident of Bab Qinnasrin, touched upon the complications caused by the recent earthquakes in Syria.

"We rushed to repair (our pie shop) but the earthquake exacerbated the existing damages. Now, we are trying to fix it to reopen it," Qubersi said.

The reconstruction efforts are further hampered due to difficulties in obtaining building permits as highlighted by Mohammed Sami Jamal Mowal, a local who was displaced as the war broke out in 2011

"We confront difficulties with applying for a building permit at the municipality. And some people breach the standards, and regulations of the construction "

The city of Aleppo has been subjected to massive destruction due to the Syrian Civil War since 2011 as it saw fierce battles that led to the destruction of a large part of the city. In February 2023, the city was also affected by the devastating earthquake that struck northern Syria and southern Turkey.
