Description

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the home of Brooklyn Center's police department to protest the recent killing of Daunte Wright on Tuesday.

Protesters held banners against police brutality and chanted slogans such as, "We are here to shut down this town."

"We want justice, we want the ability to live and to thrive, we want the same things that we see our white male counterparts having," said one protester.

"We want everything that America has freely handed out to others, but we have been denied as people of colour and descendants of enslaved African people," they added.

Wright, 20, was killed on Sunday after being pulled over for a traffic violation and there was a struggle while he was trying to get back into his car.

Wright was shot by officer Kim Potter and was later pronounced dead after he crashed his car several streets away after driving away from the scene of the shooting.

Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department subsequently announced her resignation on Tuesday, as did police chief Tim Gannon.

A police statement released on Monday said the incident was an accident, as the officer intended to use a taser, not a gun, on Wright.

Tensions in nearby Minneapolis are high as the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer accused of killing George Floyd continues.
