Description

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Belgian PM Alexander de Croo visited several flood-stricken towns on Saturday, observing the damage done and talking to the distressed locals.

Locals were seen clearing debris and mud from their homes and streets amid rooted up trees and stranded cars.

"The European Union has been helping with helicopters, with boats, but I just reassured the citizens that we will, of course, be here also for reconstruction," said von der Leyen, adding "we stand by the side of people concerned in this region, and not only this region."

At least 20 people died in Belgium. Another 20 still missing after flash floods hit the east of the country and parts of western Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. In Germany, 133 deaths were reported as of Saturday.
