Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team's swimmers Evgeny Rylov and Kliment Kolesnikov said they were overwhelmed with joy as they had claimed gold and silver in Tokyo 2020 men's 100m backstroke on Tuesday.
The two young Russians beat American defending champion Ryan Murphy, who had won Men's 100m Back in Rio in 2016, in a thriller race, breaking the US consistent dominance on the world stage on that distance. Rylov swam the distance in 51,98 seconds, setting a European record.
Speaking at the press conference after the triumphant swim, Evgeny Rylov said he had "reached his goals and dreams" and it was impossible for him to "start to believe it had happened."
Rylov stressed that he was unaware he had managed to break a 25 years drought for athletes from Russia to win Olympic gold in swimming disciplines, noting that fact was contributing to the joy he was feeling after the win.
Commenting on the absence of the national anthem due to the sanctions, imposed on Russia, the new Olympic champion confessed he would have loved to hear it playing when standing on the podium, however that situation was still better than a blank ban from the Tokyo 2020 Games.
On his part, Kliment Kolesnikov added that he was "very sad somewhere deep in his soul" that he could not hear to the Russian anthem and sing it loud together with Evgeny Rylov when standing on the podium.
