Description

Hundreds gathered in Tripoli's Martyrs' Square, in Western Libya, on Friday, to celebrate as the UN-backed Government of National Accord announced it had retaken control of the Greater Tripoli Region as well as the "last major stronghold" of the Libyan National Army (LNA) in Tarhuna.

Hundreds can be seen gathering in the square, chanting and waving Libyan flags. The previous night, Tripoli residents launched fireworks across the city in response to the news the GNA had retaken control of the region.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. More recently the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by General Khalifa Haftar.
