Description

Latakia Governorate announced a collaboration with the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) to construct 1,000 prefabricated housing units in seven different areas across the governorate.

The footage filmed on Thursday shows builders working on housing foundations as well as a few model houses already constructed and equipped with necessary facilities.

The project, initiated by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will provide the accommodation for up to 6,000 people affected by the natural disaster.

"Today, we are inaugurating the interim shelter with a capacity of 6,000 units to house up to 6,000 people while maintaining the international housing standards of providing two square meters per individual," explained the head of the Emirates Red Crescent delegation Mohammed Al Kaabi.

Al Kaabi added that the housing will also provide Syrian families with essentials.

"The housing units are supplied with clean solar energy 24 hours a day. Food and health supplies will also be provided to meet the needs of the Syrian families," he added.

The government of Latakia reserved seven sites with a total area of 10 hectares for the project.

According to the head of Latakia City Council Tayseer Habib, "nearly 1,000 alternative housing units are being constructed over seven plots across Latakia Governorate, namely Latakia city, Jableh, Stamu and al-Qabu".

"These housing units can be fully constructed and delivered to the affected within six months," he added.

Many countries, including the UAE, pledged to provide Syria with humanitarian aid after a devastating earthquake destroyed many parts of the country.

On February 6, a series of earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria. The immediate disaster killed more than fifty thousand people and injured tens of thousands more.
