President of European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said the G7 members were 'united and determined' to protect their values in the face of concerns over Russia and China. She spoke during

a press conference alongside President of European Council Charles Michel in Cornwall on Thursday.

“We will guard the respect for our values. We want co-operation, we want the lively exchange but on the basis of democratic values and on the basis of fundamental rights”, said von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen also welcomed the return of the United States to the global arena, which she said would 'strengthen multilateralism'.

During the conference Michel reiterated the EU's condemnation of the forced landing of a Ryanair flight by Belarusian authorities and called for the release of Raman Pratasevich and his partner, along with other 'political prisoners'.

“G7 partners share similar views on Russia's destructive activities. The EU

condemns illegal, provocative and disruptive Russian activities against the EU, its member states and beyond. I stressed this to President Putin in a phone call this week”, said Michel, while also noting that the EU “does not see Russia as a mediator but a party” in the conflict in Donbass.

Michel also stood by von der Leyen in comments regarding the values of the G7, noting that it was important for the EU to “strike the right balance for our best interest between engagement and standing firmly by our values” in regards to deals with China.

“We continue to stand up, to defend human rights and the rule of law in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and elsewhere”, said Michel.

The leaders of the G7 countries are holding their summit in the UK on June 11-13.
