China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian reacted to US vice presidential candidate JD Vance's claim that Beijing was 'the biggest threat to America' in a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

"We are always opposed to making China an issue in US elections," he said, when asked about Vance's comments.

The VP nominee made them in an interview shortly after being confirmed as Donald Trump's running mate for the 2024 elections, at the Republican National Convention on Monday. Trump, who survived an assassination attempt on Saturday, was also declared the official Republican presidential nominee.

Meanwhile, Lin called for an end to the Gaza conflict to cool rising tensions in the Red Sea, stating: "Let me say broadly that China opposes harassment of civilian vessels and believes that the shipping lanes in the Red Sea should be kept safe in accordance with international law."

Reports emerged that members of the Houthi group launched further, multiple attacks in the Red Sea on Monday as part of what they claim to be a response to Israel's actions in Gaza and the group's continued support for Palestinians.

A cargo vessel carrying vegetable oil from Russia to China was among the ships that was attacked by the group, according to US military officials.

Furthermore, Lin reiterated China's support for 'reconciliation' after Hamas and Fatah announced they will hold talks with Beijing this month in an effort to 'resolve deep divisions.'

"China always supports Palestinian factions in achieving reconciliation and solidarity through dialogue and consultation and stands ready to provide platforms and opportunities for all Palestinian factions to carry out dialogue for reconciliation," he continued.

The spokesperson also mentioned support for the United Nations Security Council's decision to extend the mandate for political missions in Haiti till July 15 2025, saying that it sends "a positive message of continued international support for the people of Haiti."

"China stands ready to continue working for the restoration of stability in Haiti and support the people there in seeking a 'Haitian-led, Haitian-owned' comprehensive settlement," he said.

The political mission, dubbed Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS)'s mandate, is to help the Haitian police secure key infrastructure and combat 'criminal groups' throughout the country.

Lin also announced that China's GDP for the first half of 2024 had exceeded 60 trillion Chinese yuan (8.33 trillion US dollars) or a year-on-year increase of five percent, saying that the semi-annual report finding "plays an important role as a stabiliser and power source" for the country.
