Jordan Bardella, the leader of France's National Rally party, criticised the European Union for their proposed resolution condemning Hungarian PM Viktor Orban's visits to Russia and Ukraine during a plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
"This resolution which explicitly condemns the diplomatic visits of Viktor Orban (to Russia) weakens European unity. We can't accuse Hungary, a reliable partner in the Transatlantic Alliance of wanting to keep communication channels open," he stated.
Orban held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, on what he called a 'peace mission'. Hungary holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, although other EU diplomats claimed the PM had 'no mandate'.
Bardella also reiterated his opposition to Ukraine joining the EU, saying this would "threaten the stability of our economy and our agriculture by severely destabilising the common agricultural policy". He added that Ukraine joining NATO in the face of Russian opposition "would risk creating escalation with a nuclear power."
