Thousands of Pakistanis took to the streets of the north-eastern city of Rawalpindi on Wednesday night to condemn the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, in Tehran.

Footage shows thousands of protesters waving Palestinian flags, holding up a large picture of Haniyeh, and chanting anti-Israel and pro-retaliatory slogans. Some of them are also seen wearing a keffiyeh.

"We are in great pain. The Muslim Ummah has lost a great leader. Ummah is sleeping deeply and I pray that may Allah help them awake, I also pray that our Muslim rulers may find some courage,” said protester Ashraf Bilal.

"The one (US) who is a murderer of humanity is declaring Hamas a terrorist. Hamas is a democratic force. When there were elections, Hamas was successful with its historic win. This is the same Ismail Haniyeh who was the Prime Minister of Palestine. But the US and its slaves like Muslim rulers don't like the democratic face of Hamas,” explained Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, the head of Islamic Group.

On Wednesday morning, Hamas announced the death of its political leader, who was 'assassinated along with his companion in an Israeli raid on their residence in Tehran,' according to a statement from the group. Haniyeh had been in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Hamas and Iran accused Israel of the 'assassination', while Israel had not commented on the blames or claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication.

Haniyeh first joined the Hamas organisation on its inception in 1987. In 2006, he was elected head of the Hamas Reform and Change list that won the Palestinian legislative elections and he became Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority 2006-2014.

The Hamas political leader was a key figure in ongoing talks regarding a ceasefire in Gaza.

The strike on Tehran came shortly after Israel reported that it had hit Beirut, targeting Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr. The IDF claimed Shukr was behind an attack on the Golan Heights at the weekend which killed 12 children.

Hezbollah denied involvement and blamed it on a projectile from Israel's own Iron Dome defence system which it said had been attempting to take down rocket fire directed at Israeli military installations.
