Description

Water cannons were used to disperse crowds that gathered in Santiago’s Plaza Italia on Sunday. The dramatic moment the steeple of the 19th century Parroquia de la Asuncion collapsed was also captured, as well as evidence of vandalism from inside of the church.

The anti-government rally marked the anniversary of the start of the social unrest in the country, and comes just before Chile's crucial national referendum on the amendment of the constitution on October 25.

A second church in the capital was also reportedly burned down, in the protest that saw thousands assemble, although the fire was brought under control, according to local reports.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although local media alleges protesters started the blaze.
