German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke to the German people from Berlin in a Christmas address released on Saturday, December 25.

During his speech, the president thanked "the silent majority" in the country who took the opportunity to get vaccinated, saying "The state cannot wear protective masks for us. It cannot vaccinate itself on behalf of us. It depends on each and every one of us. I want to whole-heartedly thank the silent majority who have acted carefully and responsibly in recent months."

Steinmeier also highlighted the importance of vaccines regarding the global effort to curb the spread of COVID19, saying "We can protect ourselves and others and I am glad that most people have discovered the opportunity of the vaccine."

Germany is currently in the grip of the fifth wave of coronavirus infections, with the first death from the omicron variant recorded at the time of writing.

Broad restrictions for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people are in place throughout Germany during the Christmas holidays, as the country faces 44,927 new coronavirus cases daily, according to a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from December 23.
