Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that his country was determined to "use all available tools to give a decisive and effective response to the aggression of the Zionist regime," during his weekly briefing in Tehran on Monday.

"This is a right that is the responsibility of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and it is a right that exists according to international law for any country that is subjected to aggression and illegal use of force," Baghaei said adding that Tehran would not 'neglect' its right.

Baghaei went on to comment on Iran's nuclear program saying "We are not looking for the militarization of our nuclear program under any circumstances. Our stance is what we had previously stated and it is unwavering."

He also announced an initiative to sanction Israel through a 'military embargo', which he said 'a number of Muslim countries' including Turkey were already supporting and expressed hope that more countries would join in.

Israel announced attacks on Iranian 'military targets' in the early hours of Saturday morning local time. A number of explosions were reported in Tehran by local media.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said it was "in response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the state of Israel."

Four soldiers were killed in the Israeli attack according to media reports. Several countries in the Middle East and around the world condemned the Israeli attack, including the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Indonesia, among others. The US and the UK urged Iran to exercise restraint and underscored Israel's right to self-defence, while European countries such as Germany and France called for de-escalation.

Iran launched a wave of missile strikes on Israel on October 1, which it said was in response to Israel's killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and others. PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that Tehran had made a 'big mistake' and warned of 'consequences'.

Israel is currently fighting Hezbollah with airstrikes and ground troops in southern Lebanon and conducting an ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The Gaza conflict followed the October 7, 2023 attacks which killed 1,139 people according to the Israeli side. Over 2,600 have been reported killed in Lebanon and over 43,000 in Gaza at time of publication, according to figures released by the Lebanese and Palestinian side
