Description

The Saudi political analyst and researcher in international relations, Salem Al-Yami, emphasised that the media attention towards the BRICS summit in Russia's Kazan is due to its growing role and influence, speaking in an interview on Friday, October 17. He also pointed out that the group's political success could lead to 'new horizons'.

"The BRICS group is distinguished by the fact that its starting point and origin were economic, and in my opinion, it is reaping political success and this is important, and it distinguishes it that there may be military directions in the future. So, I see it in a different way compared to other organizations," Al-Yami stated.

He also touched on the role of Saudi Arabia and Arab countries in promoting BRICS, adding that the participation of these countries, especially in recent BRICS summits, 'has given momentum to this group'. Al-Yami went on to say that these nations enjoy economic, cultural, spiritual and geostrategic dimensions.

He also emphasized that the issue of isolating Russia is 'not practical', since Russia is "an active country in the international system, and Russia was active in this system before the so-called Cold War," while finding a solution to the Ukrainian conflict would help Russia and BRICS countries to perform their roles naturally.

Al-Yami also considered that it is premature to discuss a unified payment system among member states, as it requires time and joint experiences to become part of the BRICS economic structure.

Saudi Arabia applied to join the group earlier this year along with several other countries, with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stating that BRICS is “an important and useful channel to promote economic cooperation.”

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. Leaders from more than 24 countries are expected to attend, with Russia's closest neighbours and partners in the Eurasian Economic Union and Commonwealth of Independent States also invited. Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024.
