Description

Thousands of tourists have crowded the coast at Puerto Madryn, Patagonia Region to catch a glimpse of whales swimming close to shore with their calves.

Footage captured on Thursday shows the wonderful creatures splashing around in the water, swimming around and breaching the surface. Children and adults can be seen watching the animals in fascination.

"It is wonderful to feel them, to hear them is wonderful. Last year they were even closer and it is divine. It is impressive, spectacular," tourist Pamela shared of her experience.

"It truly is incredible to see how they play in the water, sometimes there is more than one. I don't know if it will be their mothers with their children, but it is spectacular to see how close and totally in their natural habitat they are," said fellow visitor Aleixon.

Tourist Frank said he had 'an incredible experience' and left 'completely amazed.' "I never thought I would have an experience like this and have them so close and see how they play," he added.

According to media reports, Puerto Madryn attracts southern right whales to its coasts. The creatures can reach 12 meters in length for males, while females range from 13 to 16 meters and weigh between 30 and 40 tonnes.

Whale season in Argentina began in June this year and will continue until December, with species including the southern right and humpback whales visiting the area. The shores of the Rio Negro and Chubut provinces, and the Valdes Peninsula Gulf in particular, attract around 2,000 whales every season, according to media reports.

In 1984 whale watching was made a natural monument in Argentina, regulating the viewing experiences for tourists to protect the integrity of the sea creatures.
